Ask Caleb: How to Give a Life-Changing Blow Job
The honest guide I wish I’d had; built by practice, first-hand feedback, and finally learning how to pay attention.
I used to think I was naturally good at giving head because I genuinely loved doing it.
Giving myself an A for enthusiasm here, but what I learned was that enthusiasm can also make you rush the experience. It turns pleasure into a performance, which can be hot, but only once you’ve actually mastered the act.
I’ll never forget the first guy who corrected me mid-suck.
With one hand resting under my chin, he pulled my mouth off of him, looked down at me, and said, “Slow down. You’re trying too hard.” My immediate internal response: Isn’t that the point?
I remember looking up at him, mildly offended and very aware that I was still on my knees. Then he showed me what he meant.
I began again. “Less pressure,” he whispered, guiding my hand into a rhythm that matched my mouth. When I found a flow that made his stomach tighten and his knees bend, he told me not to change it. Steady pace, not a desperate sprint to finish. Just continuous motion working him toward climax.
What started as an eagerness to impress became something much more useful: a genuine desire to figure out exactly what made him feel good and keep doing it. A practice I was more than willing to refine.
After spending all that time working for his load rather than demanding it through sheer force of enthusiasm, he rewarded me with a few warm pumps. Then he leaned down, kissed me with the evidence still on my lips, and said, “Much better.”
And honestly, it was better for me, too.
That was the first time I realized wanting to give a great blowjob and knowing how to give one are two very different things. The latter came with plenty of practice and some very generous feedback.
Here’s everything I’ve learned along the way about giving the kind of blowjob he’ll still be hard over tomorrow.
Enthusiasm Goes Both Ways
We’ve established I am a fellatio enthusiast, but that’s not the case for everyone.
So before you keep going, it’s important to recognize that some guys don’t love sucking dick, and that’s fine. But if you fall into the “I could take it or leave it” camp, just remember: Your sexual partner can literally feel the difference.
Oral autopilot isn’t particularly hot and definitely won’t result in a blowjob he’s thinking about days later. You don’t have to love giving head, but if you choose to, do it well.
So what does that look like? What does it feel like?
It looks like unbroken eye contact. It feels like your hands roaming over his body instead of resting unwantingly at your sides. It sounds like the involuntary moan that slips out when you feel his body respond to you.
You don’t need to manufacture excitement you don’t feel, but you might be surprised how much more into it you get once you start getting a reaction out of him. And getting a reaction usually comes with giving a great blowjob. See, full-circle moment.
Get Him Going Before You Start Blowing
In my experience, the best oral sex starts before I am ever on my knees.
One of my favorite tricks for giving him a memorable blowjob is building anticipation by telling him how badly I want to taste him. Sometimes it’s an afternoon text or DM. Other times, it’s something I say quietly when we’re in a place where nothing can be done about it.
You might be thinking, What’s the big deal? We’re all sexting all the time.
But there’s a difference between sending a random horny message and telling someone exactly what you plan to do to them. It sets an intention. Now they know what’s on your mind, and you’ve given them a fantasy to sit with until you can deliver on it.
The point is to get him thinking about your mouth before it’s anywhere near his dick.
And when we’re finally together, you don’t rush to make good on the promise. I’ll take my time kissing him, grabbing him and feeling him get hard beneath my hand. I might carry over something I said earlier: “I want to feel you get hard down my throat.” Give him something to visualize.
One of the best reactions I’ve ever gotten happened in a friend’s kitchen after a pool party that had carried on well past sundown.
It was late enough that the party had started thinning out. The people who still had energy had left for the bars an hour ago, while others had started disappearing with whoever they’d spent the evening scoping out.
I was staying over, which meant I had somehow ended up on cleanup duty with a friend of a friend, we’ll call him Ben.
The kitchen looked exactly how you’d expect after hours of day drinking: empty bottles crowded around the sink, abandoned Solo cups everywhere and pizza boxes we were attempting to consolidate before giving up and stacking them on top of each other.
Ben and I had been flirting all night.
Nothing particularly subtle. Hanging onto his legs as he sat at the edge of the pool. Grazing against him while grabbing a cocktail. Watching each other get in and out of the water. By the time it was just the two of us in the kitchen, I was fairly certain neither of us was there for the room-temp pepperoni pizza.
We were still wearing our Speedos, slightly damp from one last swim after the sun went down. His clung to him in a way that had been distracting me for most of the evening.
He was standing at the counter when I walked up behind him to grab the last of the abandoned plates. He turned around at the same time, and suddenly we were face-to-face, our lips only inches apart. He let out a surprised little chuckle, but neither of us backed away. For half a second, we just stood there, all that energy from the night finally coming to a head.
Then he kissed me.
As you can imagine (please do), there was something especially hot about finally feeling him after hours of thinking about it. He slid his hands around my waist and pulled me closer. I brushed the back of my hand across the front of his Speedo and could already feel him getting hard beneath the damp fabric.
He pushed himself up onto the counter without breaking our kiss, bringing his face level with mine.
Ben was shorter than me. Slender, too. But as I moved between his legs, it became increasingly obvious that neither of those measurements applied to the piece of him I could feel pressed against me.
It’s always the short guys with the massive dicks.
I kept kissing him as my hand moved back down between us. His Speedo was stretched tight now, and I ran my palm slowly over him before pulling my mouth away from his.
I moved lower, kissing his chest and stomach. Then the skin just above his waistband. Then a bit lower, until my mouth was pressed against the outline of his cock through his Speedo.
I could feel him flex his dick. He was hard enough that all mystery was gone, even though a piece of fabric still separated our skin. I still wasn’t going to give it to him yet. I stayed there just long enough for him to feel the warmth of my breath through his swimsuit before making my way back up.
Then I stopped. His eyes opened. “Why’d you stop?” I smirked. “Not yet.” A wet spot had spread across the fabric around the head, which I could see pulsating beneath it, almost inviting me back.
The sound he made in response was somewhere between frustration and a moan.
It was so hot.
We eventually abandoned whatever cleaning we had been doing and made our way to the spare bedroom. By then, I didn’t need to create any urgency. I had spent the better part of twenty minutes building it.
And when I finally gave him what I’d been teasing all night, there was nothing subtle about his reaction.
He still messages me about that blowjob. That was three years ago.
That is the point of teasing. You are prolonging pleasure. Anyone can go straight to sucking a dick. What makes it memorable is everything you did before your mouth took over.
Kiss his neck. His chest. His stomach. The inside of his thighs. Pause close enough for him to feel your breath. Look up and let him see that you know exactly what you’re doing to him.
Then start slowly enough that he still has somewhere to go.
What makes it memorable is everything you did before your mouth took over.
Give Your Mouth a Helping Hand
Speaking of mouths, trying to give an entire blowjob with yours alone is impressive in theory, exhausting in practice.
It’s the difference between someone giving you a massage at home and getting one from a professional. At home, their hands are cramping and they’re tired after 10 minutes. A professional can go for an hour because they know how to use their body efficiently. Hands, palms, forearms, pressure, oil — different elements working together so they aren’t struggling through it and you never have to think about the effort happening on their end.
Your mouth, hand, tongue, spit and lube should work the same way.
The foundation of a great blowjob starts by wrapping a lubricated hand around the shaft just below your lips with steady pressure. Some guys like a tighter grip, but we’ll get to that later. When your mouth moves down, let your hand travel with it. When your mouth moves up, bring your hand with you. The goal is for the two motions to feel so connected that he isn’t thinking about where your mouth ends and your hand begins.
Once you get that motion down, pay attention to how easily your mouth is gliding over him. Spit is great, but not everyone produces enough saliva to keep things slick for long, so lube can quickly become your best friend. It keeps everything moving smoothly and saves you from trying to summon spit before you rub him raw.
Reapply as needed to keep things slick, but not necessarily soaking. Too much lubrication can reduce friction to the point that some of the sensation gets lost. And taking a second to add more lube, drink some water or give your jaw a break doesn’t ruin the blowjob. It means you can keep going without your mouth staging a revolt.
The best technique is one you can actually sustain. You shouldn’t be fighting through a cramped hand, aching jaw or dry mouth just to prove you can keep going. Your hand, mouth and tongue are all there for a reason. Learn to use them together, and he’ll only be thinking about how good it feels.
Your jaw will thank you. He probably will, too.
Learn the Sensitive Places, Then Learn His
Now that you understand the fundamentals, what separates a good blowjob from the best blowjob is learning how to personalize the experience. Anatomy gives you a map, but every guy comes with his own preferred route.
For many men, the frenulum, the sensitive strip of tissue on the underside of the cock where the head meets the shaft, is particularly responsive. Try slow strokes with the flat of your tongue, smaller circles or light flicks with the tip to see what gets a reaction. The head may also respond well to gentle suction and tongue pressure, while the shaft can usually handle a firmer hand.
Pressure is relative, and some guys really like a firm grip.
Start with enough pressure to feel in control of the movement and go from there. Try a lighter or tighter grip and see how he responds. And remember, your hand doesn’t have to stay directly beneath your mouth. Bracing it around the base gives you another point of contact while your mouth and other hand work higher up.
Then there are the balls.
As arousal builds, you may notice them naturally drawing closer to the body. Some guys love having them gently held or lightly pulled when that happens, keeping them clear of your hand as the motion increases. Some love them licked or sucked.
Pro Tip: A little light ball play is also a great way to give your mouth a break if you feel your jaw tightening up.
What makes one guy curl his toes might make another tense up in the wrong way. So explore while using the fundamentals to keep the pleasure going as you figure out what he likes. Does his breathing change? Do his thighs tighten? Does his stomach contract? Do his hips move toward you? Does his hand suddenly find the back of your head?
His body will tell you a lot, but you are also allowed to ask. “Slower?” “More pressure?” “Like that?” It isn’t cheating to ask what feels good.
For some guys, though, talking during sex isn’t their thing. Even when it comes to giving guidance. I learned that with a guy I used to meet up with in a bathroom on campus.
He was so hot. Stoic. And didn’t say a word.
For the first few minutes, I had no idea whether he was enjoying himself, so I stopped, looked up and said, “I need a little help. Pressure? Speed? Anything?”
He looked embarrassed, then admitted he did not like talking during sex. I’m sure it didn’t help that we were in a semi-public space, so I said, “Okay. Just squeeze my shoulder if you want more or tap me if you want less.”
When I slowed my mouth and tightened my hand, he squeezed. Hard.
I repeated it.
A minute later, he squeezed a little harder. That’s when I knew he was getting close. I kept the exact same rhythm instead of getting excited and switching into some frantic finale.
I stayed steady, repeating the motion until I felt his whole body tense. As he came, he squeezed my shoulders so hard I was almost certain I’d have bruises.
As quickly as he came, he wiped up and left. But we met back up over the next semester a few times in the same scenario. He’d communicate through his body rather than his words while we were hooking up, but afterward, he often praised how well I sucked his dick.
It wasn’t just the physical act. We had figured out a way to communicate that worked for him, and I paid attention.
Not every partner will narrate the experience for you, and not everyone is comfortable speaking in full sentences while aroused. Build an easier language beforehand: faster, slower, softer, firmer, keep going. A hand squeeze. A tap.
Control the Rhythm, Especially Near the Finish
Going back to my frantic finale comment, one of the easiest mistakes to make is assuming the closer he gets, the faster you need to go. Sometimes more intensity is exactly what he wants. Other times, it ruins the rhythm that got him there in the first place.
Consistency near orgasm is one of the most useful lessons I have ever learned.
If his breathing changes, his body starts to tense or you get the sense that he’s close, resist the urge to suddenly give him everything you’ve got, unless he tells you otherwise. If the pressure, speed and motion are working, keep them consistent. This is not the time to introduce a new technique.
I learned this the hard way through trial and error.
It’s very easy to feel someone getting close, get excited yourself and instinctively speed everything up. But I’ve found the hottest thing you can do is just keep going, inching your way toward his climax rather than rushing him to it. More speed doesn’t automatically mean a more intense orgasm.
Something else to consider: If you both enjoy edging, this is also where you can play with cadence. Think of his arousal as a scale from one to 10. When he reaches an eight, slow down or pause. Stroke him more gently. Let him drop to a six, then build him back up again.
Done well, the intensity starts to come in waves, each one getting him a little closer until you finally let the last one crash.
Just make sure he knows that’s the plan. Delayed gratification is hot when you both want it, but some guys also have a window where an orgasm feels imminent, and interrupting it can make getting back there difficult. Deny it at the wrong moment and you may end up making the blowjob memorable for the wrong reason.
Consistency near orgasm is one of the most useful lessons I have ever learned.
Positions, Depth, Control & View
Now that we’ve covered what you’re doing, let’s talk about where you’re doing it.
Position affects everything from the angle of his dick in your mouth to how much control you have and, sometimes more importantly, what he gets to watch.
Deepthroating is a good example. It can be hot, but it’s not necessarily going to earn you the gold medal of giving head. Some people love it. Some don’t. Some can comfortably take more depth than others. None of that determines whether it will be the best blowjob of his life.
If you do want to go deeper, stay in control of how far you go. As we discussed, your hand at the base can act as a buffer, letting you create the sensation of depth without asking your throat to accommodate every inch. Breathe through your nose, take your time and don’t fight your body when it tells you it has had enough. Unless you’re into that sort of thing.
Position can make all of that easier.
The easiest starting point is having him lie on his back while you position yourself between his legs, facing him. You can kneel on the floor at the foot of the bed or lie between his thighs, depending on where he is. Either way, you’re approaching his dick from the front and have control over how much you take.
His anatomy can also make certain angles more comfortable than others.
If his dick curves upward, for example, changing the angle of your head or body may give you a more natural path. Try lying on your back with your head over the edge of the bed while he stands or kneels in front of you. The change in angle can make depth easier for some people, but it also gives the receiver considerably more control, so this is one where boundaries and a clear stop signal matter.
Sometimes changing positions isn’t about making anything physically easier. It’s about changing what he gets to see.
Kneeling while he stands or sits on the edge of the bed is pretty straightforward physically, but visually, it can create a stronger submissive energy and give him a much better view of what you’re doing.
Which brings me to mirrors.
I was hooking up with a guy who had a full-length mirror in the corner of his room. He was sitting on the edge of the mattress with me between his knees. Whenever I looked up to catch his eyes, he was looking somewhere else.
At first, I thought he was distracted. Then I realized he was watching us.
His eyes would move from me to the mirror and back again, lingering on our reflection, so I shifted slightly to give him a clearer view. From where he was sitting, he could look down and watch me swallow him or glance toward the mirror to see my head bob, back arch and ass spread, exposing my smooth hole while I was on my knees.
“You like watching?” I asked. He nodded without taking his eyes off the mirror.
Writing this is actually getting me hard. Focus, Caleb!
Anyway, I became much more aware of what the scene looked like from where he was sitting. The angle of my body. My hand moving with my mouth. The moments I adjusted my head to catch his gaze in the reflection instead of looking up to meet it directly.
And the more I gave him to watch, the more he reacted.
At one point, I reached back with my excess spit and started rubbing my hole, eventually slipping a finger inside while I continued sucking him. He ran his hand down my back and replaced my fingers with his own while I continued blowing him.
Nothing about my technique had fundamentally changed. I was doing the same things I’d learned and shared with you. But now he could watch himself receiving all of that attention.
By the time he finished, I was watching him in the mirror, too. I could see his entire body contract. Apparently, getting to watch was part of what got him there.
If you try a position where speaking might be difficult, agree on something nonverbal beforehand, like two firm taps on his hip or thigh.
Take It Further, If You Both Want To
There are plenty of ways to take a blowjob beyond the basics.
Prostate stimulation can be a great way to enhance his pleasure if he’s willing to explore it. Start externally by gently rubbing the space between his balls and hole. (That space is called the perineum, for anyone who has confused this with a medical journal.) If he wants to take it further, go slowly and let him guide the pressure and depth.
If you’re adding internal stimulation while giving head, one well-lubricated finger is all you need to start. With him lying on his back, gently insert your finger and curl it toward the front of his body in a “come here” motion while sucking him. That can really add another layer of stimulation.
Wow, I am really playing Dr. C right now.
Never surprise someone with a finger because you’ve decided to deliver the deluxe package. Another lesson learned along the way.
The same goes for toys, restraints, rougher head control or any stronger power exchange. These can all add to the experience for the right person and scenario, but only when everyone knows what to expect.
None of this requires you to graduate to some higher level of giving head. Skill isn’t how many techniques you can fit into one encounter. It’s knowing which two or three this person wants.
Talk About the Finish Before It Arrives
Can you feel that? We’re getting close.
Which means it’s time to talk about where all of this is going. Don’t wait until the final seconds to discover that you and your partner imagined different endings. Before you get too close to the finish, know where he actually wants to cum. And where you’re comfortable with him doing it.
In your mouth, on your body, in a condom … on your face.
These are all options, but they should never be expectations. Swallowing is a preference, not proof of enthusiasm. Knowing beforehand means neither of you has to negotiate logistics with three seconds left on the cock clock.
When he does orgasm, don’t assume the second he finishes is the second everything should stop. Many guys become extremely sensitive immediately afterward, so soften your suction, loosen your grip and slow the motion as needed. Move away from the head if direct contact becomes too intense, but let the experience taper rather than completely drop off a cliff.
The finish should feel like part of the blowjob, not the moment the blowjob ends.
What Actually Makes It Life-Changing
The best compliment I’ve ever gotten after giving head wasn’t even a compliment as much as an exclamation: “I don’t know how you did that!”
This came from a guy who declared before the blowjob even started that he “never cums from head.” We all know the type. And the truth is, a lot of guys can have a hard time cumming from oral. But sometimes it’s more about the approach than the act. When I first started, it was all about enthusiasm (as you now know), but I quickly learned that getting someone off was about figuring out what worked specifically for them.
So I took all the lessons and feedback, both explicit and unspoken, and started paying attention to what actually got each guy off. For Mister Never-Cums, it was the combination of gagging sounds and nipple play while I sucked him off. Which makes me sound like a real whore, but it’s the truth.
That’s what experience has taught me: There are fundamentals worth knowing, but they only get you so far.
You can learn where he’s sensitive, how to use your hand, when to change pressure, how to control your rhythm and which positions give you both what you want. But none of those things on their own will give him the best blowjob of his life.
Because there is no single technique that works on every dick attached to every man. The real skill is figuring out how to put everything you’ve learned together for the person in front of you.
Stop trying to prove you’re good at giving head. Get interested in giving him good head.
And, in my experience, that’s when they get a life-changing blowjob.
A Final Note
A few days ago, after writing this piece, I had an encounter with a guy I met after a workout class. Storytime incoming, so keep an eye out. 🥵
But it didn’t go exactly as expected.
We were both extremely turned on, still sweaty and practically ripping each other’s clothes off, but when I started giving him head, he was having a hard time getting and staying hard.
Which brings me back with one final reminder: All of these tips, anecdotes and advice will only take you so far before anatomy and environmental factors override your best efforts.
You cannot grade the experience solely by the firmness of his erection.
Bodies respond to stress, fatigue, alcohol, medication, nerves, distraction and about 50 other things nobody invited into the room. If he gets soft, don’t panic and don’t immediately assume you’re doing something wrong … and definitely don’t make him explain what his dick is doing because I can guarantee he is already thinking about what his dick is doing.
You’re probably wondering: Caleb, why were you still sucking his dick then?
Well, fun fact about me: One of my favorite things is feeling someone get hard in my mouth. But more importantly, he asked me to keep going. So I did. Even as blood flow came and went, he was clearly enjoying himself and eventually, while still mostly soft, he came.
And in a volume I genuinely could not believe.
It was a reminder that an erection is one response to pleasure. It isn’t the only one.
What is the best piece of feedback a partner has ever given you, in bed or anywhere else?
Tell me in the comments. I can’t wait to read your responses :)
